Matt Morrey
In high school, I taught myself how to play guitar. I played in several bands throughout high school and college but put music in the backseat when entering the real world. While more of a rhythm player, I can certainly take on leads when needed. However, I find this to be more limited as I am often providing lead vocals to almost all the songs we play. While it may not seem too glamorous, having a strong rhythm guitar is a key component to solidifying any band and I take great pride in this. I enjoy playing a wide spectrum of rock music from AC/DC to Grateful Dead and all things in between.
Before the rise of DNR, I hadn’t regularly picked up a guitar since 1992. In fact, I hadn’t really given any thought to playing guitar again until Rick Alvarado (lead guitar/vocals) gave me a call and asked if I “wanted to jam” with a couple of guys. It’s hard to believe that was about 12 years ago.
As we started to play more and develop our sound, we recruited my wife, Audrey, to provide keyboard and additional vocals. With this lineup, it feels as though we can play almost any song across a broad spectrum of genres, ensuring that we can play something for everyone!
When I’m not playing in the band, I’m caring for many patients as an orthopedic hip and knee surgeon in San Antonio with a busy and growing practice. I enjoy spending time with my 4 pretty cool kids and 3 dogs, fishing, and painting. With a master’s degree in medical illustration, I still draw for the occasional book chapter or journal article too.
I am beyond glad that I received Rick’s call. Collectively, these may be the most talented musicians I have had a chance to play with, and from day one things just seemed to click.
